Avis was founded in 1946 when Warren E. Avis opened his first car rental office called “Avis Airlines Rent A Car Systems” at the Willow Run Airport in Detroit (USA). In 1948, the company changed its name to Avis Rent a Car and in 1965 it was expanded abroad with the opening of the European, African, and Middle Eastern divisions (Avis Europe) to which the Asian continent has been recently added. Eight years after, Avis started leading these markets and continues to do so since then. Avis has a worldwide presence in 163 countries through its 4,800 rental sites, carrying out more than 15 million rentals a year. The key of our success is mainly based on our particular vision to build the best and most growing company in the car rental business through a continuous investment in our office network, state-of-the-art technology and what is most important, in people. For Avis, people are the crux of business: clients, employees, suppliers, collaborators and the public in general. All its operations are marked by said view, which has allowed Avis to currently have commercial agreements in Europe with 375 of the 500 most important companies of the continent, including the majority of the airlines and train companies, tour operators, travel agencies, hotel chains, assistance companies, vehicle leasing and insurance companies. We have the most technologically advanced international computer system for the management of reservations and rentals in the vehicle rental business. The more than 16,000 terminals of said system allow us to: . Confirm more than 100,000 reservations daily from or for any Avis office in the world. . Process more than 2,5 million transactions a day. . Provide our clients with instant information about any characteristic of the rental and the service. The system is directly connected to the world’s most important computerized Reservations Systems like Amadeus, Galileo, Sabre, Apollo, Sita, System One and Worldspan, which allows to access in real time more than 400,000 travel agencies’ terminals and company departments in the world. In 1996, Avis became the first car rental company to have a “WEB” site in Internet: www.avis.com through which Internet users can access relevant information about the rental service, in any part of the planet, as well as personally request and confirm their reservation.
